The d8 is an octahedron die made up of 8 triangular faces, numbered 1 to 8. The numbers are arranged so that the largest number (8) is on the opposite side of the smallest number (1), the 2nd largest number (7) is on the opposite side of the 2nd smallest number (2), and so on. The sum of the opposite sides is always 9.
d8 dice, along with the d6, are what most would consider THE damage dice in Dungeons and Dragons. Typically, one-handed martial weapons that still allow for the use of a shield or another off-hand weapon deal damage determined by rolling one or more d8 dice. Similar to the d12 and d10, the d8 is also used as a hitpoint die for various classes in D&D.
